Jon Jones’ Legal Team Looking Into Possible Foul Play Regarding January Drug Test

When news broke after reigning light heavyweight champion and pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones had tested positive for cocaine metabolites in an out-of-competition drug test prior to his UFC 182 title defense over Daniel Cormier, the MMA community was understandably stunned.

Jones attended a rehab facility soon thereafter; however, the champ reportedly only stayed for one night, which added to the controversy. Another problem was that cocaine is actually not a banned substance out-of-competition, leaving little punishment to be given to Jones.

This fact also raised some questions as to why the test was given in the first place, and why the results were released to the public if “Bones” essentially did nothing wrong. He did end up receiving a $25,000 fine from the UFC, but other than that, the commission could not enforce any punishment.

Almost two months removed from UFC 182, Jones is not quite over the issues just yet. Speaking with Ariel Helwani of  MMAFighting, the champion stated that his legal team as well as he is looking into possible foul play regarding the now controversial test:

“I do have a great legal team behind me. We haven’t quite completely let it go. We wanna see what went wrong and what could be done about it. I’m not gonna comment too much on that whole situation, but I aware that there was some foul play in the whole situation and right now I’m kinda weighing my options.”

It’s hard to say what kind of foul play exactly the champion is talking about, but one thing is for sure, this is probably not the last time we will hear about the whole fiasco.

As for what’s next for “Bones,” he is set to defend his title in the main event of UFC 187 on May 23, 2015 against arguably his toughest test to date in the surging Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. Johnson is riding a nine-fight streak, and may actually present a challenge to the champion.

Despite the drug test drama, do you see Jones once again defending his belt in May?
