Jon Jones Hints At Heavyweight Fight With Stipe Miocic
UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has played it coy about an oft-rumored move to heavyweight.
That is, until now.
After winning the title back at UFC 232, Jones discussed defending his light heavyweight title several times this year. He was looking to make up for the lost time USADA suspensions took from his career the past several years. He made a quick turnaround to dominate formerly rising Anthony Smith at March’s UFC 235. There were whispers he’d defend the title against another surging knockout artist in Thiago Santos.
However, ‘Bones’ is taking things up a notch. The controversial champion teased a potentially massive fight with former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic on Twitter today:
“I don’t think you guys are ready to witness @stipemiocic and I, would July give you all enough time?”
Miocic has been out of action since he lost the title to Daniel Cormier via first-round knockout last July. Prior to that loss he set the record for most consecutive defenses of the UFC heavyweight title.
Many believe he’s the greatest heavyweight champion in UFC history, and it’s safe to say Jones is the greatest light heavyweight champ of all-time. If not for his outside-the-cage troubles, he’d almost definitely be the greatest MMA fighter of all-time. He may still be.
So a fight between Jones and Miocic is a true super fight, one between two legendary champions. Defending the 205-pound title is nice, but many have been hoping Jones would finally make the move up to heavyweight. It appears he’s finally willing to oblige them.
And there’s an even better possibility that could arise from this match-up. It’s hard to envision Jones not facing Cormier in their oft-discussed trilogy match if he gets by Miocic. On the flip side, Miocic could finally get his desired rematch with ‘DC’ if he beats ‘Bones.’
There’s just not many better fights the UFC could book for July’s International Fight Week. Let’s hope it happens for the fans.
