Jake Shields talks Middleweight move
Early this week, MMA Tonight reported that Jake Shields, after a four fight stint at Welterweight, would be returning to the Middleweight division.
Shields relinquished his Strikeforce Middleweight crown in 2010 and joined the UFC’s Welterweight ranks. In his first UFC bout, Shields defeated Martin Kampmann via a somewhat controversial split decision. That victory earned him a shot at UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre, a fight that Shields lost via unanimous decision. Shields would fall again in his next fight, being knocked out by Jake Ellenberger. In his fourth bout at 170 he would defeat Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 144.
Shields recently spoke about the potential move, “I told them I’d like to fight late July/early August. I’m waiting to hear a call from them. I’m in no rush. If they call with an opponent at 85, I’d take it right now cause I’ll have enough time to bulk up, I’m just trying to lift. But I’m not opposed to fighting at 70, if they call with a good offer for a fight at 70, then I’d take that as well.” – for more see MMAWeekly.
