Invicta 7 Results Recap: Barb Honchak Outlasts Leslie Smith To Retain Title
Invicta 7 took place last night from the Ameristar Casino and Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri.
The event featured a flyweight title fight between champion Barb Honchak and Leslie Smith. It turned out to be quite the slugfest that went the full distance, something of a trend for this particular card. Honchak dominated the wrestling and dropped Smith with a big front kick but Smith was a warrior who never stopped pushing the pace with her boxing. Ultimately Honchak retained the belt with a unanimous decision.
The co-main event between Lauren Murphy and Miriam Nakamoto for Invicta’s first-ever bantamweight title turned out to be a good scrap. Nakamoto utilized some great kickboxing but Murphy was relentless in her takedown attempts and finally secured a few.
Unfortunately it was marred by an anticlimactic finish when Nakamoto was forced to stop at the outset of the fourth round after injuring her knee in the third round. Hopefully she returns soon and the two can settle their rivalry with a rematch.
In other action Tecia Torres dominated the popular Felice Herrig with a one-sided decision, utilizing crisp boxing throughout to land a high volume of strikes. Herrig never had an answer for the striking of Torres, who stifled her opponent’s takedown attempts with ease.
Rounding out the card, Joanne Calderwood stayed undefeated in a close bout with Katja Kankaanpaa. Julia Budd left no question in a win over Charmaine Tweet, and Vanessa Porto kicked off the card with a decision over Zoila Frausto Gurgel.
