Ian McCall Says Flyweights Are “Swept Under The Rug”

UFC flyweight Ian McCall plans on talking sh*t like Conor McGregor and bringing some attention to his division….

The UFC flyweight division has some rather interesting characters, and you could argue that none are more unique than Ian McCall. “”Uncle Creepy” will face John Lineker on November 8th at UFC Fight Night 55, in a fight to likely decide the next contender to Demetrious Johnson‘s 125-pound title.

In a division that has never really made it fully in to the limelight, McCall and Lineker have another chance to bring some attention to the flyweights. Speaking with MMAFighting.com, “Uncle Creepy” has some interesting opinions on the state of the division:

“No one really gives a s**t about us, and it’s true. I mean, maybe it’s Demetrious’ fault for not being the marketable guy, even though he’s an amazing athlete. Maybe it’s my fault for not beating him up when I should’ve. Maybe people really just don’t care about seeing small half-sized people fight. I don’t know what it is, and it’s frustrating, but at the same time, you just get over it, whatever, I go in there and do my job.

“”This is the entertainment business, and as a whole, the flyweight division, apparently we’re not doing enough, so I’m just going to take it upon myself to beat the crap out of everybody, become champion, and then just start talking s**t like Conor McGregor and causing trouble. You never know, I might get a DUI. Who knows. I’m going to do whatever I can to make money and to get the little people some publicity.”

The abysmal UFC 174: Johnson vs Bagautinov are a clear indicator that McCall is on the button, but perhaps blaming the dominant champion is a little narrow minded. He continues:

“We don’t get paid the same, and I’m not hating on the UFC, the UFC treats me amazing. If you want to make more money, you fight more, you win more. But it’s just an overall consensus from everybody that we just kinda get swept under the rug and no one seems to really care. The women get a lot more exposure than we do, and let’s be honest, we’re twice the fighters they are.”

“But it’s true. It’s BS because they don’t push us like they should, and like you said, we are the two top guys going for the number-one contender fight. You’d think they would promote it more. Obviously Shogun is going to headline the card. Shogun is Shogun, everyone adores him, he’s huge, he’s an ex-champ. But it’s like we’re the stepchild no one cares about.”

The flyweights in the UFC undoubtedly have the most technical footwork, fast hands and the highest pace overall, so what is holding them back? The truth is that the fans really are disinterested on the whole, and that is a huge mountain to overcome for the 125-pounders in the UFC.

I can’t say I agree with “Uncle Creepy” and his opinions on women’s bantamweights in the UFC, and he has the chance against the heavy-handed Lineker to win some fans. Would you be interested in Ian McCall vs Demetrious Johnson III, or are you even paying attention to the UFC flyweight division right now?
