Hendricks vs. Kampmann may no longer be #1 contender’s bout
When the UFC matched up Johny Hendricks with Martin Kampmann, most assumed that the winner would get the next crack at the UFC welterweight title.
Not so fast.
Dana White recently went on record during the UFC 154 conference call to say that he has “no idea” whether the winner between Hendricks and Kampmann would be pegged as the #1 contender. The primary reason being that, if Georges St-Pierre defeats Carlos Condit in Montreal on November 17, a super fight against Anderson Silva would likely be next on the UFC docket.
“I have no idea. We have to see how this thing plays out,” White said on the call. Obviously, a fight between GSP and Silva would lock up the title for at least several months. Meanwhile, the winner of Hendricks and Kampmann would have to wait a minimum of 6-9 months before getting a shot at GSP. And that would clog up a fluid welterweight division. That’s something that White doesn’t want to commit to just yet.
However, if Condit comes out victorious and without any controversy, you can probably anticipate that the Kampmann-Hendricks winner would be his first title defense.
“Carlos Condit … will defend the title against who’s next (if he beats St-Pierre),” White said.
