Glover Teixeira & Phil Davis Verbally Agree To Fight Later This Year

UFC light-heavyweight contenders Phil Davis and Glover Teixeira suffered setbacks in their title aspirations last time each man fought; for GT, it was a five-round beating at the hands of the young champion Jon Jones at UFC 172, and for ‘Mr Wonderful’ it was a three round mauling by resurgent Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson on the same Baltimore card.

Combate.com is reporting that the two have verbally agreed to fight this year, check it out:

“After losing the light heavyweight title fight (93kg) to champion Jon Jones, Glover Teixeira is almost sure who will face on his return to the Octagon. The contract has not been signed, but the Brazilian has a verbal agreement with the UFC to face the American Phil Davis later this year. The date and place of the duel were not defined. The information was confirmed by Combate.com from sources connected with the organization.”

One potential card that needs a few more names is UFC 179, which will play host to the rematch between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes in Brazil. Rankings-wise, the fight makes sense, and it will be a good tester as to which direction each fighter’s career is headed. The Brazilian had a nine year undefeated run ended by ‘Bones’ in Maryland, so he will likely be fired up for a fight with Davis.

‘Mr Wonderful’ was riding three straight before getting royally whooped by Johnson, and a loss would not be very good at all for the grappling ace. The lead up to the tilt with ‘Rumble’ saw a very different side to Davis, as he seemingly overlooked Johnson to trash Jon Jones at every opportunity. The embarrassing loss could turn in to a do-or-die situation should GT bash him when they meet.

So what do you think, will Davis redeem himself after multiple fails at UFC 172, or will Teixeira start another run at the title that he came (not so) close to winning?
