George Kambosos Jr plans to train with Alexander Volkanovski, with there being the potential for the Aussie boxer to make his MMA debut in the future.

Kambosos Jr. recently stunned the boxing world by beating Teofimo Lopez via split decision to capture three lightweight titles. The undefeated lightweight has now joined Alexander Volkanovski as a fellow champion from Australia’s New South Wales. Now the pair from down under both look at helping each other become better fighters in their respective sports.

Kambosos Jr spoke on the MMA Hour about potentially getting in the gym with Volkanovski.

“I’m a very good fan of the UFC. I love the sport; I love combat sport. And me and Alex have a good relationship as well.”

He’s been supporting me, I’ve been supporting him, and I said I’m going to come back with all these belts — obviously he’s the UFC featherweight king and I’m the lightweight king, and we’re going to help each other. And how good would that be?

For me to sharpen up his striking; for him to sharpen up my grappling, my inside game, when I do get in the clinches, to be able to use my weight and get a little bit sharper on that side of things too.

So, it’s a good thing because we are both proud and we both got to the top of our sport, and we’re both Greek as well. I know we’re proud Aussies, but have Greek heritage, so a lot of familiar similarities.”

There are many similarities between the two, both men showed immense heart and determination in their previous bouts, Alexander Volkanovski by defending the relentless Brian Ortega’s submission attempts at UFC 266 and Kambosos Jr. to get knocked down in the closing rounds of his fight and still be able to get back up and go onto win.

Therefore, it is not surprising these two athletes at the top of their sports would be wanting to trade a few tips, with Kambosos Jr looking to get things going as soon as possible.

We’re going to organize that when I get back and we’re going to do a few things together, and like I said, sharpen up. His hands are super sharp already, but a little bit more always helps. And he’s going to sharpen up my inside game and my clinch game. And who knows, you might see me make my UFC debut soon. He might be boxing real soon. You never know.”

When asked Kambosos Jr seemed genuine about a potential move into the octagon in his future.

“Maybe down the line, maybe down the line, we’ll see.”(transcribed by mmafighting.com)
