Frankie Edgar Reacts To Aldo’s Retirement, Alvarez vs. McGregor
Former UFC lightweight champion and current featherweight number two Frankie Edgar returns at UFC 205. Facing Jeremy Stephens in the iconic Madison Square Garden, ‘The Answer’ will hope to bounce back from his second loss to Jose Aldo. UFC 200 played host to the interim title bout between Edgar and Aldo, as Conor McGregor continued his plight at welterweight. After the junior belt was won by the Brazilian with a gritty five-round decision, ‘The Answer’ was left with his five-fight win streak broken.
Presently it is Aldo who now finds himself frustrated, as Edgar eyes a hometown bout with ‘Lil’ Heathen.’ Similarly to Edgar, Aldo has once again been refused a fight with Conor McGregor. The Irishman will take on Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt on November 12. ‘Scarface’ responded by demanding a release from his UFC contract. Apparently fed up with ‘being a whore for money,’ it looks like the Brazilian icon is done fighting.
Edgar’s Reaction
Jose Aldo’s furious statement about the UFC and Dana White somewhat voices the opinion of many fans. Now the rankings become more irrelevant by the day, money fights are taking prime position in the promotion’s future. Discussing Jose Aldo, McGregor vs. Alvarez and more, Frankie Edgar appeared on The Luke Thomas Show.
“I get his frustrations. I’ve been in his shoes, where you’re promised one thing and it doesn’t pan out. It’s an attraction, the people want to see these characters. What’s most important isn’t always the fight that involves yourself, and that’s where Aldo is at. He probably deserved a shot at being 145-pound champion, because Conor’s not coming back down, or a shot at Conor himself. That’s just the way it is, you just gotta deal with it, life isn’t fair.”
Alvarez vs. McGregor
“I think Eddie could go out there and sling it out with Conor, no doubt. He has great cage control, takedowns against the fence. Eddie has that dog in him though. He might go out there and trade with Conor, but the takedown is always there. If anyone had the takedown against McGregor it was Chad Mendes, and it really worked well for him there.”
“McGregor is a kind of front-runner. I was really impressed in his second fight with Nate, he toughed through and showed some grit. It was uncharacteristic of Nate to get tired, but I know he came in a little bit injured, so that played a factor too. I would look to wrestle against anybody, but especially against Conor.”
