Frank Mir Is Interested In Welcoming Josh Barnett Back To The UFC

With the recent news that Josh Barnett has been re-signed to the UFC, plenty of rumours have started circulating about potential opponents for ‘Warmaster’. Frank Mir is a name that seems to crop up in most circles, mainly due to the fact that the two would match up very well stylistically.

Frank Mir spoke in a recent interview with El Octagano about the possibility of a match up with the returning Barnett:frank mir sherdog com

“I think that would be a phenomenal fight,” Mir said  “I think that some of the fans have talked about it a lot on the Internet as far as who is the better catch wrestler. And I think that I would be more than happy to welcome him to the UFC and I think it would be a great fight.”

With the top half of the Heavyweight elite already tied up in fights or fighting recently, I think this would be a great fight to put on. The styles match very well, and it would either cast Mir back in to the title mix or prove that Barnett still has what it takes to hang with the best.

Following a three fight winstreak between 2010-2011, Frank Mir has suffered back to back losses for the first time in his twelve year career. After losing by TKO to Junior dos Santos in May of 2012, Mir fought Daniel Cormier this past April-losing by decision. Mir is facing a do or die situation, another loss could well spell the end of the ex-champion’s career.. My hat’s off to Mir for calling out such a game opponent at this stage in his career.

Barnett also stands to lose a fair amount of stock if he fights Mir, Barnett has a record of 31-6 with all his losses coming to pretty much the best guys he has fought. What I mean by that is Barnett needs to start beating top fighters again, his time outside the UFC has helped Barnett amass a good record-mostly over poor opponents. It’s not Barnett’s fault that all the best fighters are in the UFC, it’s just a fact.

I’m not taking anything away from Barnett, he is an awesome guy, but the fact remains that he needs a big win if he wants to be taken seriously in the UFC‘s HW division.
