Frank Mir Done Answering Retirement Questions Following UFC Fight Night 71
Todd Duffee vs. Frank Mir in a heavyweight bout served as the main event of UFC Fight Night 71 on Wednesday night and it delivered.
Mir, who is a two-time UFC heavyweight champion, found himself on a four-fight losing streak before winning his last two fights and believes that heavyweights mature later in life compared to other fighters in different weight classes.
Mir told the media following the event that after this win, he hopes that he doesn’t have to answer any more retirement questions. Following this win, he’s 2-4 in his last six bouts.
“I think heavyweights mature later in life,” he said. “We come upon ourselves older. … Hopefully, I don’t have to answer anymore am I going to retire questions.”
If you missed his fight with Duffee, then what a fight to miss. Both guys came out firing and swinging for the fences. The fight ended 1:13 into the first round after Mir landed a counter left that put Duffee to sleep.
Mir stated that he felt that he fought dumb and out of emotion rather than sticking with his game plan. He felt that he should have stayed more intelligent rather than risking it all in just one minute of the fight.
“I was trying to be more intelligent, but today my emotion got the best of me leading up to the fight,” Mir told MMAjunkie following the win. “And I just a bit down on my mouthpiece and wanted to make a statement. I kept hearing ‘old and crafty,’ so I guess I was kind of dumb tonight and just wanted to show young and brash.”
Following UFC Fight Night 71, Mir did not call out anyone or hint at what could be his next fight but expect Mir to fight later this year.
He stated in past interviews that the older he gets, he has to let his body recover longer in order to be the best fighter possible. He said that the reason he was losing during that losing streak was because he did not let his body recover.
