Floyd Mayweather Says Conor McGregor Is Popular Because Of Racism

It seems Conor McGregor‘s comments about killing Floyd Mayweather aren’t the most controversial in the feud between the two superstars…

Conor McGregor’s super-stardom has reached unprecedented levels in the last year, as he’s gone from a little known two-weight Irish champion, to the UFC featherweight champion with a target on his back in a matter of seven fights in two years. After beating Chad Mendes at UFC 189, McGregor unified the interim belt with a spectacular knockout win over Jose Aldo at UFC 194.

Among other things, ‘The Notorious’ is one of the most fluid trash talkers in the game, and it’s landed him in an ongoing beef with former boxing great Floyd Mayweather. McGregor once said he would kill ‘Money’ in a fight, and it seems even though he’s now retired, Mayweather hasn’t forgotten those comments yet.

Talking to Fighthype.com, Mayweather says he feels McGregor is more popular than he is in the media because of racism.

“I don’t really know the McGregor guy, never seen him fight,” he told fighthype.com.

“I heard his name actually from one of the runners that works for our company, a little kid named Ken Hopkins, he’s a runner and takes care of a lot of the daily business.

“Whatever we need, he takes care of. He’s a cool little kid, I like him, and he does MMA. He told me about the guy McGregor.”

“They say he talk a lot of trash and people praise him for it, but when I did it, they say I’m cocky and arrogant. So biased!”

“Like I said before, all I’m saying is this, I ain’t racist at all, but I’m telling you racism still exists.”

Shots fired!

While his comments might seem a little pig headed, they do raise some interesting questions. Is the combat sports world racist? Not that this writer can see, but that doesn’t mean bias doesn’t exist in this situation. Maybe it’s because McGregor is backing up his smack talk with crazy knockouts, as opposed to dance-hall decisions that let down the paying fans. Or maybe Floyd Mayweather is just a bigger douchebag.

You be the judge.
