Two of the greatest heavyweights in the modern era will do it again in Las Vegas #SeaLevelCain

The UFC heavyweight championship picture will have a new number one contender after December 30. After their first fight ended in a stunning submission win for Fabricio Werdum, Cain Velasquez will get his chance for revenge at UFC 207. Officially announced by the UFC late last night, Werdum-Velasquez 2 will likely be co-main event in Vegas. Headlining the pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena is a women’s bantamweight title clash between Amanda Nunes and former champ Ronda Rousey.

Since defeating Velasquez at UFC 188, ‘Vai Cavalo’ has gone 1-1 in the octagon. Following a year on the sidelines, the Brazilian fighting legend returned at UFC 198. Facing the rampant Stipe Miocic in the Brazil-based main event, Werdum tasted the second knockout loss of his career. Silencing the Brazilian crowds, Miocic would go on to fight on his own home turf of Cleveland at UFC 203, smashing Alistair Overeem in the main event. Fighting just once since the 2014 loss to Werdum, ‘CV’ dominated Travis Browne en-route to a TKO win at UFC 200.

After also defeating Travis Browne at UFC 203, Werdum set himself up for the much debated rematch with Velasquez. interestingly, the American Kickboxing Academy wrestler was offered a title shot if he waited for Miocic, but opted to stay active and seek revenge. The term ‘Sea Level Cain’ came around after the first bout with Werdum. Velasquez had not put in the proper training time at altitude for their scrap in Mexico. As a result, may claim his performance was hindered and ‘CV’ looked depleted.

Having some of the best grappling accolades among any current UFC fighter makes Werdum a continual threat on the mat. His improved striking since joining Kings MMA mean ‘Vai Cavalo’ is no longer a one-trick pony, but an elite and well-rounded fighter. With Miocic eyeing an early to mid 2017 return, all the marbles are there to play for.
