We are now 48 hours post UFC 188, and the feeling of having a new heavyweight champion is sinking in. For months leading up to the title unification bout, Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez went back and forth, making different claims about what they would do to one another. At the end of the night, Werdum had the last laugh – literally.

In an interview with Portal do Vale Tudo, Werdum admitted that he started laughing before Velasquez succumbed to the deep choke hold.

“It was a war, a great fight. Velasquez is such a tough guy, a really hard opponent, but I was able to do my strategy and do it all according to the plan,” said the new champ. “When I saw the opportunity, I knew I wasn’t going to let it go, I even started to laugh before he tapped.”

Months and months of training in Mexico showed during the fight, as Werdum seemed very accustomed to the high altitude. As Velasquez started to wear down, Vai Cavalo started to take over.

“I was well conditioned and it made a difference. He had been out for two years and came to Mexico two weeks before the fight.”

What everyone thought would be advantage Velasquez, actually caused him to lose the fight. As Velasquez grew tired, and became more desperate, a sloppy take down attempt left his neck open for the three time world Jiu Jitsu champ to grab a hold of – and the rest was history.
