Dos Anjos: If McGregor Moves Up, The Belt Will Remain With Me
Brash, and outspoken Irish superstar the “Notorious” Conor McGregor has a huge test in front of him, as he is finally set to take on reigning featherweight champion Jose Aldo in a title unifier bout on December 12, 2015 in the main event of UFC 194.
McGregor is widely confident that he will become the undisputed 145-pound champion when he finally meets Aldo, but he made waves a few weeks back at the UFC’s “Go Big” press conference where he said that after UFC 194, he will move up to 155-pounds, calling out lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in the process.
Recently speaking on an edition of Inside MMA, dos Anjos responded to McGregor’s claims, saying that while the Irishmen is good with the talk, it’s a different story when two fighters are locked inside of a cage:
“This guy, he’s good on the cameras you know,” he said. “He’s good for talking to people and he shows, you know, he feels comfortable when he do that. But, when we get locked in the cage it’s just two guys, you know.”
McGregor has been often criticized for avoiding the top tier featherweights on his quest to a title, although he did knockout No. 1-contender Chad Mendes at UFC 189 after Aldo fell out. However, Mendes came in on short notice which leaves more doubt in the minds of many fans.
Continuing on, dos Anjos said that the “Notorious” one hasn’t beaten top contenders, and if he does decide to come up to lightweight, RDA vows to keep the title:
“”He’s beat good guys but he didn’t beat the top guys, he didn’t beat Frankie Edgar, he didn’t beat Cub Swanson, Jeremy Stephens. There’s a bunch of guys that will beat him. Of course, if he comes to lightweight division I am the belt holder right now. I will make sure this belt will remain with me. Whenever he wants to step up and try to take this away from me I will make sure I’m going to keep with me.”
Would McGregor stand a chance against the lightweight elite?
