Nothing makes a fighter more confident then when their mentor truly believes in him or her. In the case of Yoel Romero, a very respected man in the MMA community believes he is a special athlete.

In an interview with Elias Cepeda of FoxSports.com, American Top Team (ATT) founder Ricardo Liborio shared his thoughts on the 38 year old Cuban wrestling machine.

“Pressure is the No. 1 thing, though. Machida is the kind of guy that you can’t let him dictate the pace. Every time you see him lose, it is off of being pressured. If you don’t pressure him, Machida will rise above. Pressure is something very important, but at the same time Yoel’s wrestling is at a different level. He can wrestle, strike well and is very good on the ground. Yoel Romero may be the very best athlete we have at American Top Team.””

Romero might not be too well known in the fight community, but he has an unmatchable presence where he trains. ATT is one of the top gyms in the world, so for Liborio to feel like this about Romero really shows a lot.

Recently, Machida has struggled against bigger fighters – just look at the decimation he received from Luke Rockhold. Tonight, Romero will look to use his wrestling ability, and overall athleticism to control the battle tested Machida.

As always, anything can happen when two men step into the cage. Machida has had a lot of success in the UFC, but it’s clear this his time is limited. Romero is looking to prove that he belongs at the top of the division, and a win over Machida will help bolster his case.
