Diego Sanchez Returns To The Lightweight Division
Despite 3 straight Fight Of The Night bonuses, Diego “The Dream” Sanchez will be returning to the Lightweight Division. His success was mixed, going .500 with wins over Martin Kampmann and Paulo Thiago and losses to Jake Ellenberger and John Hathaway. But his tweet from a few days ago confirmed the weight class switch.
MY NEXT FIGHT WILL BE AT LIGHTWEIGHT.
— Diego Sanchez UFC (@DiegoSanchezUFC) December 10, 2012
Sanchez, in the past, has clamored for a fight with Nate Diaz, saying that he’s a big fan of the Diaz Brothers and their style. And with Nate Diaz coming off of a 5 round drubbing at the hands of champion Benson Henderson, a fight with a returning Diego Sanchez could be just what the doctor ordered.
It should be noted that Diego Sanchez was fairly successful during his first run at Lightweight, defeating Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson prior to the loss to then-champion BJ Penn. With this return, Diego Sanchez looks refocused and refueled. What will come of this weight cut? Will Sanchez become another name to add to the contender’s list? Only time will tell, but Sanchez hasn’t looked this good and this passionate about fighting in a while, and it is fair to say that his future looks promising.
