Derek Brunson Gets Stoppage Win Over Sam Alvey

Matchup number four on the main card of UFC Fight Night 73 showcased a middleweight tilt. Derek Brunson (14-3) was hoping to at least keep his number 15 slot in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) 185-pound rankings. To do so, he needed to get past Sam Alvey (26-7), who was looking to crack the top 15 himself.

Brunson walked out of Nashville with a win, although it wasn’t without controversy.

Brunson threw an overhand with bad intentions and pressured Alvey against the cage early. Brunson connected with some punches as Alvey held on to a Muay Thai plum. Brunson threw wild strikes at Alvey and some of them landed. He continued chasing his opponent and eventually dropped him. Some strikes on the ground followed and referee Mario Yamasaki stopped the fight with the crowd booing the stoppage. Alvey got up and protested the stoppage, although he looked wobbly after the fight was over.
