Demetrious Johnson On His Next Opponent: ‘I Don’t Give A Damn Who It Is’
Demetrious Johnson is recently coming off a win over John Dodson, which saw him retain his flyweight championship back at UFC 191. His next fight is up in the air, but a possible fight with Henry Cejudo is very likely. Also another name that is being floated around is Joseph Benavidez.
However, Johnson stated in a recent interview with MMAjunkie that he doesn’t care if he fights Cejudo or Benavidez next. He just wants to fight.
“That’s not my place to say. … People are saying Joseph [Benavidez] might be next, which is fine. I’m a competitor. … I want to fight whoever is going to get me to that number – breaking the record for title defenses.”
“Obviously the marketing thing would be obviously Henry Cejudo because he’s undefeated. He’s a gold Olympic medal wrestler. I’ve never fought an Olympic caliber, wrestler. I think as a business standpoint and a marketing standpoint that would be the match to make. But obviously he has [Jussier] Formiga, and if Formiga wins, he got knocked out by Joseph [Benavidez]. He got knocked out by [John] Dodson. There’s not that mystique around him. Henry Cejudo has that. But for me, I don’t give a damn. I just want to fight.”
Johnson (23-2-1) is currently on a nine-fight winning streak.
Cejudo declared after the NSAC suspended Nick Diaz for three years after testing positive for weed that he would not fight in the state.
Johnson has gone on record by saying that he wants to fight in Las Vegas on Super Bowl weekend. That would be on February 6th as the UFC always holds an event on the Saturday prior to the big game, but his next opponent is not known at this time.
With Cejudo not wanting to fight in the state and Johnson wanting his next fight in the state, there could be problems with booking that fight.
It’s only a matter of time before we find out who Johson will be fighting next.
