“DC”: Jones Should Be Guiding Light For A Lot Of People
It’s going to be a rough couple weeks for UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones, after the news that he failed a drug test for cocaine metabolites and entered a rehab facility. The news came as a shock to everyone, especially after such an impressive defense of his title against Daniel Cormier at UFC 182.
Although many have taken the opportunity to jive at “Bones” during this time, his arch-rival and UFC 182 foe “DC” showed support in the aftermath of the news. Perhaps Jones brought a lot of the negative reactions upon himself with years of playing the role of heel, yet still Cormier has positive words to say. Check out what he said to MMAJunkie about his loss to Jones, and the subsequent drug test failure:
“It’s lay down in bed and think about the fight over, and over and over again,” he said. “It eats at me. I see everything he does; I see all of his social media jabs at me and everything. And I welcome them, and I will use them as motivation to rebuild myself. I’m very aware, but very disappointed, in the fact that I didn’t accomplish this goal.”
It was certainly apparent how the loss had impacted on Cormier at UFC 182, as the tough contender fought back tears at the post-fight press conference. Still, even with all the hatred and the crushing defeat fresh in his memory, “DC” said the following on Jones:
“I thought this is a guy who has kids and this guy needs to be a positive light for a lot of people,” he said. “I don’t really feel like I look at him any differently. I just want the guy to get help and just be like a guiding light for people, to be a positive influence.”
“You see glimpses of it, like him giving clothes to the homeless on Christmas. You just kind of hope that he can make that how he is all the time.
“He makes an impact on a lot of people because of his status. He’s a guy that really impacts people at a whole different level than most guys in MMA. So, with that being said, you would hope that he takes it serious, gets whatever help he needs, and comes out better on the opposite side.”
If ever there was a time to kick Jones while he is down, it’s now. The only thing is, Cormier is just that nice of a guy that he won’t. The champion’s drug test fail should come as a lesson, especially considering THC would’ve probably cost him the title. Hopefully some good will come of this situation, and maybe more people in the same predicament can get help.
