Daniel Cormier Says All He Wants To Do Is Fight Jon Jones

Jon Jones

The filming for the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter began this past week with coaches Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The two will face off in a highly anticipated super fight in the main event of July 7’s UFC 226 with 205-pound champion Cormier moving up in weight to challenge heavyweight titleholder Miocic.

Ahead of the fight, Cormier said that he’s simply chasing history:

“You know what I chase,” Cormier told MMAjunkie on Friday. “I want to be remembered. When I’m done, I want people to remember the things that I did in this sport.

“… Doing ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ is part of the necessary buildup. I’m excited about it. It’s just a way for me and Stipe to compete before we compete. I love it.”

And if he does come out on top, “DC” feels as if his name should be ‘in the conversation’ with the greatest fighters of all time:

“I’m in the conversation,” Cormier said. “I’m in the conversation for the greatest fighter ever. I think that I should be talked about as one of the best fighters, regardless, because of what I’ve done in this sport in such a short period of time. But yeah, I believe that when you stack Stipe Miocic on top of (other big names I’ve beaten), then it starts to become a conversation, a real conversation as to when I do go in history.”

Cormier certainly has a point, as his 20-1-1 professional record his near perfect. The two blemishes, however, have come against troubled former light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones.

Jones beat Cormier at UFC 182 in January 2015, but failed a drug test and ran into a plethora of legal troubles after the fight. He then returned last summer at UFC 214 to knock out “DC”, but once again failed a drug test and is now facing a lengthy suspension.

Despite “Bones’” issues outside of the cage, Cormier said that all he wants is another crack at his arch rival:

“All I want to do is fight, and all I want to do is fight him,” Cormier said. “If you guys think for a second that (UFC President) Dana (White) goes, ‘OK, you’re going to fight Jones,’ and that I wouldn’t be ecstatic, that’s crazy. But again, that would take a lot of trust in a guy that we really haven’t been able to trust.”
