Daniel Cormier broke his right hand, will have surgery
As everyone is clamoring over just what should be Daniel Cormier’s next move, it appears another hand injury may slow down the newly crowned Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion. He broke his hand in the first round of his five round battle with Josh Barnett for the title last night, but obviously continued and excelled through the pain. Cormier will have surgery on the hand, something he neglected to do when he broke the same hand knocking out Antonio Silva in the Grand Prix semifinals. Cormier expects to fight again this year and said the following via MMAFighting.com:
“Normally when you get surgery you get it to heal faster. It’s not as bad as it was the first time, because the first time, I could hardly I even move it. No matter how bad things get, eventually the sun is going to shine. If you just keep it at, pursuing your goals, eventually good things happen to decent people. For a person who is set on his goals, good things happen. Everyone deals with adversity. It’s how you bounce back from it.”
Daniel Cormier is staying positive by focusing on his goals. He will heal and return as one of, if not the, hottest Heavyweights in MMA. You would not think he was dealing with a serious injury by the way he was fighting, throwing many combinations with his right hand involved. Cormier said he did what he had to do, an didn’t inform his corner of the break until after the fact:
“You’re in a fight, you have to use all your weapons. That’s why I was kicking, I was punching, I was kneeing him in there. Josh is too good to fight handicapped. I don’t think my coaches picked up on [the injury] because I didn’t tell them. I just kept fighting.”
Cormier came to fight and did not let adversity stand in his way, something he is greatly known for. Both he and Barnett showed a ton of heart last night, having both broke their hands and fought a full five rounds. Cormier will have surgery and heal, who is best served to face him next?
