Now that Conor McGregor is the one true UFC featherweight champion after he demolished Jose Aldo in the main event of tonight’s (Sat., December 12, 2015) UFC 194 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, talk has immediately shifted to just whom “The Notorious” would face next.

With his win over Aldo only lasting 13 seconds amidst very possibly the most hype for a UFC fight, there’s the case to be made for “Scarface,” who defended his belt seven times to get an immediate rematch. McGregor could also face Frankie Edgar, who won his fifth straight bout with a knockout over Chad Mendes in the main event of Friday’s TUF 22 Finale.

However, according to UFC President Dana White in a post-fight interview with FOX Sports, McGregor might not be fighting his next fight at featherweight at all. Apparently his coach John Kavanagh told him in the Octagon that his title win was his last fight at 145 pounds even if a bout with Edgar would be enticing:

“It’s a great fight. The funny thing is, that Kavanagh said in the Octagon he’ll never make ’45 again. He said, ‘I don’t want him making that weight again, it’s not good for him. So they they’d been talking about going to ’55, but you never know with Conor: maybe Conor decided Frankie did look good and he would like to fight him.”

The Irish star was a former CWFC lightweight champion and has predicted a move up to lightweight many times. If that is indeed the case, White said he would grant McGregor an immediate title shot against the winner of next weekend’s lightweight title bout between Rafael dos Anjos and Donald Cerrone at UFC on FOX 17:

“I’d bring him straight in for a title shot. Next Saturday, live and free on FOX, will be the fight between ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone and dos Anjos, and the winner of that, if Conor McGregor’s moving to ’55, would face Conor McGregor.”

That would certainly be quite a blockbuster match, but there are some worth challengers available at both featherweight and lightweight right now. Edgar has earned his shot as well, and while he could fight Aldo for the vacant belt, “The Answer” deserves an opportunity to prove he could give McGregor problems.
