UFC 201 went down last night (Saturday July 30, 2016) in Atlanta, Georgia. The reigning welterweight champion Robbie Lawler looked to defend his strap against explosive contender Tyron Woodley in the main event. ‘Ruthless’ was coming off a duo of gruelling battles against Carlos Condit and Rory MacDonald at UFC 195 and UFC 189 respectively, and many expected a similar story against ‘The Chosen One.’

As things turned out, Woodley came out and got the job done inside one round. Catching Lawler with an overhand right from hell, the hungry contender became champion as ‘Ruthless’ was sent in to another dimension against the octagon fence. It was brutal to watch, but we knew that round one was where Woodley needed to win the fight. Taking a grinder like Lawler in to the later rounds just wasn’t an option.

As the dust settled on Woodley’s impressive win, UFC president Dana White gave his opinion on the quick title fight. As the changing of yet another UFC belt in 2016 took place, White says he wasn’t surprised by the result. As quoted by MMAMania.com’s Adam Guillen Jr.:

“That’s exactly how everyone thought it would go. If Tyron Woodley could catch him in the first round with his fast, explosive punches he would probably catch Robbie and knock him out. But if Robbie took him in the second and third round, Woodley tends to gas and Robbie would dominate. That’s exactly how I saw it going. And that’s the way it went.”

With Woodley’s win came the challenge of a ‘money fight’ with Nick Diaz at UFC 202. The infamous Stockton brawler’s suspension for a failed drug test after UFC 183 came to an end this week, giving another interesting twist on the UFC welterweight picture.
