UFC 152 no longer set to feature JDS vs. Cain Velasquez II

Fans anticipating the highly awaited rematch between UFC Heavyweight champion and Cain Velasquez will have to wait for the time being. Dana White announced last night on Fuel TV’s post-UFC 147 show that the event, originally scheduled for UFC 152 live from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, will now be pushed back to a yet-to-be-determined date. When asked about the next Heavyweight title bout, White confirmed the change by stating:

“Yes, that fight will happen. I don’t know when and I don’t know where. That is going to depend on Junior. The fight will happen, but probably not in Toronto at UFC 152.”

So another change has been made to an early-announced card, this time to an event that was supposed to feature Rory MacDonald vs. BJ Penn as the co-main event. The makings of huge night were in place, now that is up in the air if not gone altogether. Unfortunately Canadian MMA fans have been made to suffer through several changes to the events taking place in Calgary and Toronto this year, but it would seem that is the theme for most UFC cards these days. Perhaps it’s bad luck, perhaps it’s the fighters over-training, it’s tough to say.

There were rumors flying that Cain Velasquez had broken his hand while demolishing of Antonio Silva at UFC 146, but these rumors were squashed by his camp. Going by White’s words, it would seem that the re-scheduling of the bout is now up to JDS for one reason or another. The amount of bout switching and card changing going on is unprecedented, and has caused a bit of a mess for the world’s largest MMA promotion. This weekend seemed to have shown the ill effects of all the uncertainties fighting can bring. Is the UFC putting on too many cards to sustain that pace without severe roadblocks? Should they begin announcing fights closer to the date so more of the events are set in stone? A perfect solution will never be reached, let’s hope some semblance of one is found soon.
