Countdown to UFC 188: Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum

hqdefault12

It’s finally UFC 188 fight week, as we prepare to watch the heavyweight championship go on the line this weekend (Saturday June 13th, 2015). Cain Velasquez has been out of action following multiple injuries and surgery, having last fought at UFC 166, and returns to find Fabricio Werdum as interim champ of the division. Velasquez made Junior Dos Santos look a wreck in their second and third encounters, and his manager Javier Mendez says the same fate is in store for ‘Vai Cavalo’.

Werdum has made it five on the bounce with recent wins over Travis Browne, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and Mark Hunt for the interim strap at UFC 180. The main event at UFC 188 will mark the second trip for the UFC to Velasquez’s home nation, and the second fight in a row for Werdum in South America. With the Brazilian grappler on such a hot streak, and Velasquez having been sat for so long, there are some fans and pundits that are betting on an upset in the heavyweight title tilt.

Anything can happen, but the AKA (American Kickboxing Academy) heavyweight is cut from a different cloth than most, and the renowned gym’s somewhat stone age training methods produce very elite fighters, and also some rather high profile injuries too. So the scene is set for the heavyweight championship of the world this weekend, in the finish-filled waters of 265 pounds.

Cain ‘CV’ run through the dangerous ‘Vai Cavalo’, or will it be Werdum with his new found love of striking and aggressive grappling?
