Conor McGregor: Everyone Does What The F–k They’re Told, Except Me
UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is never one to shy away from words, as the brash Irishman is notorious for his unrivaled trash-talking abilities when he takes the microphone to spit fire on the opponent he is billed against for his next Octagon bout at the time.
This time around that opponent is 155-pound champ Eddie Alvarez. McGregor will attempt to make UFC history as he challenges for a second title, something no other fighter has been able to accomplish in the promotion’s young history. To make the occasion even more of a spectacle, it will be the UFC’s first event held in the iconic Madison Square Garden arena that the UFC has been pushing hard for these past years.
Recently McGregor and Alvarez took part in a media call to promote the event (courtesy of MMA Fighting), in which McGregor once again unloaded a barrage of verbal insults at ‘The Underground King’. ‘The Notorious One’ in heated fashion proceeded to claim that if it weren’t for his superstardom bringing new eyes to the sport each and every day, the UFC would not be in the current position it is in today:
“Listen, everyone in this game does what the f*ck they’re told. Everyone but me, because I run this game,” McGregor said. “So I don’t give a f*ck about all of that. They told you you’re on the prelims, you’re on the f*cking prelims. They told you to fight, now you’re on the f*cking Fight Night. Nobody has no say in this but me. I’m the only one who can say anything about anything. Everyone else does what they’re told, and rightfully f*cking so.
“I run this whole sh*t. I run New York. I’m the reason we’re even here in the first place. I’m the reason this whole thing is happening. If I wasn’t here, this whole ship goes down. And that’s the truth. That’s facts. There’s no one else out there. There’s no one but me.”
With the rumors of a potential hiatus from the sport after his UFC 205 clash with Alvarez, much has been made of McGregor’s love for the sport leaving many to question just how long he plans to continue going to war inside the Octagon. McGregor responded by stating that not only does he still love the sport, but he is continuing to evolve and becoming more in control of all aspects of the art:
“I love it. I don’t stop. It’s all I do,” McGregor said. “I don’t do nothing else. I continue to show up, I continue to fight, I continue to put these amazing events for the amazing fans of this sport. Of course I love what I do, and not only am I not getting tired of it, I’m actually getting better at it.
“I’m understanding. I’m a lot more in control of everything, and that goes right down the line from the media content I’m giving out, just everything. I’m in control of absolutely everything in my life. I keep getting better, and that’s at everything. Not just skill-wise, not just cardio-wise, not just nutrition-wise. Everything. Every aspect of my life. Business, media, everything. You name it, I get better each and every day.”
With the massive stage that the card itself will be on in ‘The Big Apple’, McGregor and Alvarez’s contest will get the brightest spotlight shone on them as the card’s main event of the night; somewhere McGregor has gotten use to being and won’t play a factor when it comes to his focus on walking out of New York as the first ever UFC dual-weight champion:
“It’s never hard for me to focus on this,” McGregor said. “It’s the entire package, it comes with it. I remain focused. I remain motivated. And that’s why I doing what I’m doing. That’s why we are where we are, so it has not been hard for me to stay focused, to stay motivated. History is on the horizon.”
Coming off of a massive win over Rafael dos Anjos by way of first round knockout to win his first career UFC title, Alvarez will come in as motivated as ever to defend his title for the first time in his career and will be a tough customer for the featherweight champ come fight night. McGregor, however, is as confident as they have ever come, and seems to be fixated on once again cementing his name in the UFC history books by achieving yet another historical feat.
McGregor and Alvarez will meet in the main event of UFC 205 for the lightweight championship live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Madison Square Garden arena in New York City on November 12, 2016.
