Condit: I’m going to test GSP on all aspects
Carlos Condit knows that an aggressive style got him to championship-level status in MMA. However, it did not get him the UFC interim Welterweight belt because he used a highly elusive, different style to gain the belt against Nick Diaz all the way back in February. He doesn’t think that this style will prevail against Georges St-Pierre on Saturday in Montreal, and states that he will dictate the pace:
“I feel like I just have the ability to threaten from any position, whether we’re standing or the fight is on the ground. I try to finish from my back if I get put there, which I think is a big difference from some of the contenders he’s fought in the past. I’m going to test him on all aspects, on all fronts. I’m going to take the fight to him and try to see whatever opportunity I can to finish the fight.” – via MMAJunkie.com
Condit, who possesses 13 victories by way of submission, will have a hard time submitting GSP, who has only succumbed to the now infamous Matt Hughes armbar earlier on in his career. Still, Condit is confident in his submission skills off his back and in the killer instinct that earned him the UFC’s all-time highest finish rate. Condit is no doubt a well-rounded fighter, perhaps one of the best in all of MMA, but can he finish off a dominant champion such as GSP? He seems to think so, and notes that while GSP was on the shelf with a knee injury, the Welterweight division got stacked up with top-flight contenders. He expressed this with the following:
“Georges kind of cleaned out the division of all the contenders. But while he was doing that, there were some other guys that were coming to take their place.”
Two of these fighters will be fighting in Saturday’s co-main event featuring Martin Kampmann versus Johny Hendricks. Are Condit’s words here true, or is Georges St-Pierre still the king of an ultra-talented division?
