CompuStrike: UFC 129 by the Numbers
UFC 129 was a historical event for the history of Mixed Martial Arts. With 55,000 strong watching live at the Rogers Centre in Toronto and the millions watching worldwide, this was the pinnacle event for the sport. From the Facebook prelims to the fights on Spike and of course the PPV, the event was a card to remember. The main event of Georges St. Pierre vs. Jake Shields was the most anticipated fight of the night and even though the fight didn’t live up to it’s hype, GSP left Toronto that night with the Welterweight title around his waist.
According to our friends at Compustrike, Jake Shields was the busier striker throwing 418 with only 115 landing (28%). The champion Georges St. Pierre didn’t throw as many strikes as Jake with only 235, but was the more accurate fighter landing 109 (46%). Georges also landed more power shots with 57 compared to Jake’s 15. Georges also was able to takedown Jake 2/3 times and dropped him once. Jake attempted a total of only one takedown the whole fight. It’s also interesting to note that the fight took place on the ground for a total of only 49 seconds.
