UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman will face Luke Rockhold in a highly anticipated co-main event at UFC 194, in a bout that could arguably cement Weidman’s legacy as one of the greatest fighters ever. ‘Rocky’ comes with a very dangerous set of tools for the Serra-Longo champ from New York, and recently went as far as saying he’d finish ‘The All-American’ within three rounds. Stopping Weidman is a tall order even for the elite of the division, but Rockhold may well have the athleticism and skill base required.

So December 12 is the immediate future for both middleweight titans, but how about after that? ‘The All-American’ believes a bout with Ronaldo Jacare Souza or Yoel Romero will follow a victory over Rockhold, and then a move to the 205-pound division is certain, according to the champ:

“I’d say first second or third round I’ll finish (Rockhold), I’ve got to focus on Luke, and the winner of Jacare and Yoel Romero. After that we’ll look at 205 and Jon Jones, or whoever is good up there. I’m going to say that my future does eventually take me to 205. Not because of weight cutting or anything like that, but because I’m running out of guys to beat at middleweight.”

A fight with Jon Jones at light-heavyweight makes sense no matter what the circumstance for Weidman. They are two very dominant fighters and a showdown in a place like Madison Square Gardens (should that come through) would undoubtedly sell like hot cakes. There’s also the possibility that ‘Bones’ could be champion again when Weidman moves up, so a super fight makes it all the more tantalizing.

With hungry contenders Yoel Romero and Jacare Souza set to duke it out for the prime contender spot, there’s still a big gap between today and when ‘The All-American’ does eventually go up in weight. Of course a loss is not the end of the world in terms of making a decent run at the light-heavyweight strap, but the unwritten rules of super fights dictate that unbeaten champions make the best pairings.
