Chael Sonnen Believes TUF: Brazil 3 Skirmish Was ‘Straight Up Illegal’

Not surprisingly, the Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva-coached season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): Brazil 3 has featured several instances of testosterone-fueled antics, with the long-standing bad blood between the two coaches understandably at the heart of the matter.

Known for his creative trash talk, Sonnen famously irked Silva years ago, and their building feud will finally come to an end when they face off at UFC 175. The fight was originally set for UFC 173, then switched to the May 31 TUF: Brazil 3 Finale in Sao Paulo, only to be put in the UFC 175 co-main event slot before the promotion booked Ronda Rousey vs. Alexis Davis for the card, which now features two title fights.

Regardless of the overarching changes, Sonnen’s time on the show has been interesting, to say the least. There was a much-publicized skirmish that resulted in a fighter being thrown off the show; something that “The American Gangster” told MMA Fighting ultimately resulted in a crime being committed against him:

“It ended up being a two-on-one, and in that aspect, that was the most unfortunate part. The whole thing is regrettable. It never should have happened. That’s one of the deals with reality TV. If you have a bad moment, you’re caught. Everyone may have a bad moment. They go in their car, you yell, turn on the radio in you car and yell. In reality TV, if you have a bad moment, you’re busted.

And then what happened was the other knucklehead jumped in, that was a crime. That’s what it was. That was straight up illegal.”

While Sonnen and Silva’s beef will tentatively get resolved this summer, it’s easy to think something else might cause complications after so much rearranging. But the buildup has been so hyped, so drawn out, that it simply has to happen.

It’s becoming difficult to gauge what’s real and what is staged in their laughable back-and-forths, but all of that truly masks where both aging fighters are in their careers. Neither one is extremely relevant, as Silva has been out of the cage for more than a year and Sonnen has been finished by TKO in three out of his last four fights.

Still, this fight has to happen, if for nothing else than to get it over with. Are you excited for it to finally happen, or is the drama wearing thin?
