Chael Sonnen Risking NAC Fine, Still Competing At Metamoris 4
It looks like “The American Gangster” will test his hand at submission-only fighting after all.
Despite the threat of being fined at least 0,000 for his recently failed drug tests, Chael Sonnen is still planning on competing in tonight’s Metamoris 4 main event against former Strikeforce welterweight and multiple time jiu-jitsu world champion Andre Galvao.
Sonnen had been threatened by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) with a fine of up to $250,000 should he compete in Metamoris’ main event. The news came out of the blue with jiu-jitsu not considered to be fighting but the NAC have said competing would violate the 37-year old’s suspension.
News broke earlier this week that the former UFC middleweight and light-heavyweight title contender had asked good friend, former UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture to take his place in the headliner. But “The Natural” was unable to help Sonnen out due to his work obligations.
NAC Chairman Francisco Aguilar had originally said Sonnen wouldn’t be able to compete as it would breach the commission’s order but he then contradicted himself in a recent interview with Brazilian MMA website Combate.
In the interview just a few days later, Aguilar revealed that the suspension did not actually cover Sonnen competing in Metamoris. As a result “The American Gangster” will participate in tonight’s event.
When a Gangster says he will make that walk, he MAKES THE WALK.
