Chael Sonnen Reveals One Thing Conor McGregor Is Overlooking In Accepting Donald Cerrone Fight

Conor McGregor will make his long-awaited Octagon return against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in January, but Chael Sonnen believes the Irishman might be overlooking something.

McGregor and Cerrone will headline the UFC 246 pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 18. The fight will be contested at welterweight for five rounds. However, Sonnen, taking to his podcast, “You’re Welcome,” believes the five-round aspect of the fight could be a factor McGregor is overlooking. (H/T MMA News)

“Conor is likely to go in as the heavy favorite…,” Sonnen said. “[But] understand one thing. The fight is scheduled for five rounds. If Conor ever had a flaw in his career, and he hasn’t had very many, he’s been open to admit it, he gets tired.

“To come off that layoff that he’s had… and yes he’ll be looking for that finish, he’ll be looking for that left hand, he’ll be looking to get Cowboy out of there, I understand that. But he did the same thing with Nate Diaz, and when he found out that Nate could take a punch, all of a sudden you’re in the later rounds, and all of a sudden you’re out of energy.”

McGregor has only made it to the championship rounds twice in his MMA career. The first being a majority decision win over Nate Diaz in 2016, followed by a submission loss in the fourth round to Khabib Nurmagomedov. Sonnen believes McGregor accepting the five rounds fight with Cerrone is a “miscalculation” on the Irishman’s part.

“I do feel in many ways the miscalculation here is to walk back into a five-round fight,” Sonnen said.
