Chael Sonnen: Fabricio Werdum Much More Talented, Cain More Effective

Ahead of tonight’s (June 13, 2015) UFC 188 in Mexico City, Mexico, analysts are quick to speculate on what could be the biggest heavyweight title fight in MMA history. We know about Cain Velasquez’s long layoff and Fabricio Werdum’s recent string of success.

But how do the fighters actually match up?

Discussing the bout on ESPN’s SportsCenter yesterday, former UFC middleweight and light heavyweight No. 1 contender Chael Sonnen said of the two fighters:

“Fabricio Werdum is much more talented, Cain more effective.”

Despite getting knocked out by Junior Dos Santos in 64 seconds, nobody has been able to touch Velasquez.  What he does well, he does to perfection. His boxing is on point, and his wrestling is brutal.

On the other hand, Werdum has more tools in his arsenal. His striking game has evolved ever since getting knocked out by a familiar foe in JDS, and his Jiu Jitsu is arguably the best of any heavyweight in the world. Though Werdum is more well rounded, Sonnen still believes Velasquez is more effective when fighting.

Velasquez is the best wrestler that Werdum has ever faced, and Werdum is the best grappler Velasquez has ever faced. History will be made tonight when these two gladiators go to war in Mexico City.

Tune into UFC 188, live on pay-per-view tonight, at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
