Cain Velasquez’ Camp Refutes Reports Of Broken Jaw

UFC heavyweight champion put on the performance of his life at last Saturday’s UFC 166 in Houston. Dominating arch rival Junior dos Santos throughout their trilogy-ending match, Velasquez retained the title in arguably the most impressive win of his career.

However, it was reportedly not without injury. According to the UFC 166 medical suspensions, Velasquez earned a broken jaw for his efforts. But that’s not the case at all according to Velasquez camp. Representative Heidi Seibert told MMA Junkie that the champ is indeed fine, at home enjoying time with his family:

“The thing is totally fine, and it was totally fine. He hasn’t seen a doctor or anything. He’s at the park with his family,” Seibert said. “He’s been eating whatever he wants. He’s fine. He was at the after-party by 1:30 in the morning, feeling fine…so we have no idea where it came from.”

Velasquez also appeared on last night’s edition of “UFC Tonight” for an interview with friend and training partner Daniel Cormier, and showed no lasting effects of an injured jaw. A physician close to the bout at UFC 16 surmised that Velasquez might have broken his jaw, earning him a lengthy suspension. His camp can appeal the suspension, but no word on that course of action has been released.

Velasquez did have a sizeable cut on his nose that required a few stitches, but that’s a rather small price to pay for a victory that has him knocking on the door of being called the best heavyweight to ever fight in an MMA cage.

The champion is rumored to face Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum in his next bout. The Brazilin Jiu-jitsu wizard should provide a different kind of test for the surging titleholder, but at this point, it doesn’t look Velasquez will be dethroned any time soon. Hopefully the jaw issue is cleared up and the champ is back to action sooner than later.
