Brock Lesnar Reps Testing Eye Medication And Foot Cream As Possible Source Of Failed Drug Tests

While his return was big, it did have a negative impact on the legacy of former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. After his fight with hard-hitting Mark Hunt in a heavyweight bout at UFC 200 this past July, which Lesnar won by decision, it was revealed that Lesnar failed drug tests that were collected on June 28 and July 9. It was rumored that asthma medication might have caused Lesnar’s positive drug tests, but Lesnar has requested tests on both an eye medication and foot cream for clomiphene and clomiphene metabolites.

At this week’s hearing, Lesnar’s attorney advised the Nevada State Athletic Commission of efforts to determine the source of the banned substance. However, at the time of the motion, the efforts for those tests to be done were unsuccessful.

Howard Jacobs, a prominent anti-doping attorney representing Lesnar, wrote a letter that was obtained by MMA Junkie that was dated September 19th.

“We are still investigating this matter (which investigation includes the ongoing testing of products used by Mr. Lesnar prior to the date of the positive test). To provide further detail, I am advised that the testing laboratory (Korva Labs) initially tested an eye medication, which was negative for either clomiphene or clomiphene metabolites. Subsequent testing has been conducted on a foot cream; that testing has included three separate extraction attempts, all of which have failed. A fourth extraction attempt is being made by Korva Labs this week.”

Due to Lesnar’s alleged offense taking place before the commission started using the new anti-doping rules, he is likely to face a lesser punishment compared to what he could have been facing. Usually, a first-time steroid offenders have received a one-year suspension.

“I assure you that we have been diligent in our investigation and testing, and that the requested delay is not being sought for any improper purpose,” wrote Jacobs. “If the hearing can be rescheduled to a mutually agreeable date in November, I am confident that we can be prepared so that the case can be heard on the merits at that time.”

At the NSAC hearing on Monday, they granted Lesnar a continuance after receiving assurance from Jacobs after he said that he would hire local counsel to formally represent the fighter during the hearing.
