Brendan Schaub Moves Down To Light Heavyweight For Next Fight

Brendan Schaub

With three knockout losses in his last six fights, UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub clearly had some soul searching to do.

That soul searching may have been expedited by a rather harsh discussion he had with UFC announcer Joe Rogan after his UFC 181 loss to Travis Browne, where Rogan completely and utterly disparaged Schaub’s chances in the dangerous UFC heavyweight division.

Today (Sat., March 28, 2015) it appears that Schaub has heeded those words, as “Big Brown” has decided to cut down to 205 pounds in order to fight his next bout at light heavyweight.

The move, which was speculated upon last week, was confirmed by Schaub on his “Fighter and the Kid” podcast this week.

It’s most likely a good idea, as sustaining repeated knockouts at the hands of the world’s heaviest hitters is never a good idea for one’s health, and in truth, Schaub was probably never going to be a true contender as long as fighters like Cain Velasquez, Junior dos Santos, Fabricio Werdum, and Browne rule the top of the division.

He’s lost four of those last six, and his submission win over Matt Mitrione at UFC 165 ranks as truly the only high-level victory during that stretch.

The former professional football player is obviously a great athlete, and his skills could translate well into the light heavyweight arena if he’s able to add some speed to go with what should already be a massive amount of power for the division.

But he won’t have an easy road at light heavyweight in the UFC, either, so it’s still on Schaub to prove he deserves to be compete with the world’s most elite mixed martial artists.

Who would you like to see “Big Brown” square off with at 205 pounds?
