Bellator 139 Highlights: Hisaki Kato Obliterates Joe Schilling
Bellator 139 went down last night (Friday June 26th, 2015) as the opener to yet another BMMA vs. UFC doubleheader of MMA (mixed martial arts) action. The main event was a heavyweight collision between UFC veteran Cheick Kongo (23-10-2) and ‘Drago’ Alexander Volkov. The heavyweight headliner was thoroughly overshadowed though, as middleweight Hisaki Kato (5-1) delivered a knockout of the year candidate against kickboxing beast Joe Schilling (2-5). The huge finish comes at the same time as the announcement of bellator/josh-koscheck-lands-deal-with-bellator/”>Bellator’s latest acquisition, TUF original and UFC vet Josh Koscheck, making it another busy week for the promotion.
The shockingly awesome knockout finish came just 30 seconds in to round two, and was akin to the beastly blow delivered by Travis Browne against Stefan Struve. As Schilling clattered to the mat already out cold from stunning superman punch, Kato delivered a final coup de grace to his defenseless foe. Bellator 139 may not have had the ‘star’ power of Bellator 138 last weekend, but this finish alone made the card stand out well in comparison.
Over to Kongo in the main event, he blasted Volkov for the entire fight, it’s as simple as that. The man who once famously rebounded from a near-death experience with Pat Barry in the UFC is proving that he is a top contender for the promotion’s heavyweight title. Brian Alessio and Daniel Rickles was unfortunately a NC (no-contest) after an illegal knee put Alessio out of the fight, although he was pretty much done way before that anyway.
