Background check: Chuck ‘The Iceman’ Liddell
Born Charles David Liddell on December 16th 1969. Chuck is 6ft2in and weighs in at 205lbs with a 76.5 inch reach. He holds a 10th degree black belt in Kenpo karate, a purple belt in BJJ, was an NCAA division 1 wrestler and is well versed in kickboxing. He made his debut at UFC 17 in 1998 where he beat Noe Hernandez by decision. He has since built up a record of 21-7(13ko,1sub) and is widely regarded as the best knockout artist in the game(see my fan opinion top 10 list).
Since his debut victory in the UFC Chuck has mainly fought for this organization, with a three trips to Pride in japan and some lesser known banners. During his time in Pride Chuck knocked out Guy Mezger and Alistair Overeem, his third fight was a TKO loss to Rampage Jackson. In his UFC career ‘The Iceman’ has lived up to his name by knocking out such fighters as Randy Couture twice, Tito Ortiz twice, Jeremy Horn, Vernon White and Babalou twice. While he was with the UFC he won the LHW title and defended it four times.
Arguably, his best fight in the UFC was against Wanderlei Silva at UFC 79 which saw the two legends trading heavy strikes throughout, with Chuck landing the decision victory. Chuck has lost 4 of his last 5 fights in the UFC and many including Dana White have urged him to retire. After a break Chuck is hoping to return this year and rumors spread that a rubber match between Chuck and Tito could be in the works. Now 40 years old Chuck is surely in his twilight years as far as fighting, but I really hope he can provide one or two more knockouts before he leaves.
