Artist Creates $66K Marble Statue Of Conor McGregor
Former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor is getting an interesting gift for his 30th birthday. Artist Edgar Askelovic, better known as Aspencrow, has created a life-sized sculpture of the UFC star.
He dubbed it as ATLAS, which is a piece that is worth $66,000 USD. His birthday takes place on July 14th. This gift will be given to McGregor while two other pieces are being made to be sold in JD Malat Gallery.
The statue took five months to create and was used of platinum silicone, marble powder, UV-resistant polyurethane resin for the eyes, and real hair for Conor’s signature crop cut and beard.
“It is an honor that Conor has accepted this as a gift from me,” Aspencrow told Highsnobiety. “He is a phenomenon of our time – not just a smart athlete, but also a visionary.”
“To create the piece, I looked back to antiquity, when athletes were immortalized in sculptures as gods. And I combined some details from a Michelangelo statue with modern day graffiti to capture the present day’s warrior sensibilities,” Aspencrow went on to add. “People of our generation grew up on graffiti and hooliganism, so I’ve displayed part of his tattoos on his back in graffiti.”
The belief is that McGregor will return to competition under the UFC banner this July during International Fight Week possibly against former title contender Donald Cerrone.
