Alistair Overeem Will Fight In The UFC Again
Heavyweight Alistair Overeem will fight in the UFC again, according to UFC president Dana White who defended “Reem” on last night’s episode of ‘UFC Tonight’
Ben Rothwell upset the odds at UFC Fight Night 50, as he blasted Alistair Overeem for the first round knockout. The loss marked the third for the Dutch K-1 world champion since joining the promotion, and puts him 2-3 overall with three KO losses. Many fans thought that the shock loss would have cost Overeem his job, but UFC president Dana White spoke out to the contrary.
During an appearance on UFC tonight, White said that he wouldn’t be cutting the top 10 heavyweight just yet:
“He’s still ranked in the top-10. He’s still one of the top-10 heavyweights in the world, and we’ll get him another fight.”
We’ve seen fighters get cut for a lot less in the past, and you could make an argument for double standards regarding Overeem. Not only is his record for the UFC sub .500, he was famously popped for freakishly high testosterone levels after his bout against Brock Lesnar. Apparently having a name is enough to keep your job after drug busts and getting knocked out 3 times from 4.
Truth be told, I do want to see Overeem fight again in the UFC, so I am glad that the promotion has decided to keep him on. He clearly has the potential to be a great fighter, but just isn’t quite living up to that standard right now. Is it a lack of confidence, or is there something we don’t know about? Whatever the weather, “The Reem” is not performing at full capacity on fight night, and it’s costing him dearly. At least this time it hasn’t cost him his job, but Overeem is in last chance saloon right now, again.
