Thought Alistair Overeem was on steroids? Think again says The Reem…

Former Strikeforce, DREAM and K-1 champion Alistair Overeem is currently riding quite the hot streak in the UFC, coming off a stunning second round victory over Andrei Arlovski in Rotterdam. The TKO win was the second finish over a former champion in as many fights and, including his KO of Stefan Struve and decision over Roy Nelson, the demolition of ‘The Pitbull’ puts Overeem on a four fight streak.

With how the division looks right now, his magnificent front kick against Arlovski in The Netherlands last weekend (Sunday May 8, 2016) puts ‘The Reem’ right on track for a title shot, as much as these things can be plotted out. But it hasn’t all been roses for the big Dutchman since joining the UFC back in 2011, in fact he came close to the wire on a number of occasions during his UFC tenure.

Joining the UFC with a dominant win over Brock Lesnar at UFC 141, it looked as though ‘The Demolition Man’ had a bright future ahead of him. It would be some 18 months before Overeem would fight again though, as he became entangled in a drug test failure following an alleged escape attempt from a Las Vegas hotel when the NSAC testers came calling. A duo of brutal knockout losses were to follow, against Travis Browne and Bigfoot Silva, and in fights where ‘The Reem’ was heavily favoured to win.

A gradual change in Overeem’s physique also followed, as a trimmed down version of the former steak house won a decision over Frank Mir at UFC 169, before getting royally upset by Ben Rothwell in September 2014. That was the K-1 kickboxer’s last loss, and his muscle bound structure has continued to become less weighed down to the point he’s dropped around 20 pounds from what he used to fight at.

Of course he’s not slimmed down to anywhere near the wiry light-heavyweight we saw in the Japanese MMA days, but the difference is quite apparent. The accusations of steroid use were rampant back when Overeem was at his bulkiest, and he’s got a message for his critics who are pointing out his more slender current body type…

So Alistair Overeem took to his Instagram account after certain people had fired criticism at him over steroid use. He acknowledges that he’s dropped a fair bit of muscle mass over the last few years, but claims that cardio has been the key. Check it out:

Considering Overeem holds a win over Fabricio Werdum, the current UFC champion, and is riding such a tidy winning spree, expect to see his new cardio formed physique put to the test for a title very soon.
