Alexis Davis Says She Is Ready For The Title Shot

Alexis Davis made a big statement with a win over Liz Carmouche at Fight For The Troops 3, beating the former title challenger convincingly over three rounds. With the win, Davis is catapulted in to the title mix in the ever growing Women’s BW division. Davis currently resides at number four in the 135lb. category, and should be expecting a contender bout in her next outing. ‘Ally-Gator’ stopped by to talk with BJPenn.com about her latest fight and future hopes:

“I was just – I trained really hard for that fight, you know, I had really good coaches making sure we were studying a lot of her previous fights. That was really the key for that fight for me, because we watched a lot even what she did with her past fight, she came out southpaw, so we had a game plan for everything that she could possibly do. Obviously she could study me and try to throw me for a loop, but it was just good preparation on my part and on my coaches’ part.”

“Obviously if you ask any fighter in our division they’re going to say this is where they want to be, and they think they should be the rightful [contender]. I’m sure if you cross paths with Sarah McMann or… Sarah Kaufman, everybody wants that shot: that’s what we’re looking for. I feel like I’ve earned it. We’ve all put our time in. What the UFC gives me next, you know, they give me next.”

The Women’s 135 pound division has grown rapidly since it’s inception, producing plenty of talent to challenge Ronda Rousey’s inaugural title. With so much talent comes a need to perform at your best every time out, or risk losing your spot to the hungrier combatant.

“I’m going to be able to capitalize on a lot of things that other fighters kind of had that opportunity but maybe haven’t studied as much jiu-jitsu as I have in the past. We look at all these opportunities of fighters where they have gotten her back [from] her throws, obviously with her judo background.”

“That’s – I hate to say it, but it’s one of my favorite positions to take, I love taking the back position and going for the choke. So obviously [there’s] no doubt in my mind that’s something that I’m looking for. Who knows? Is she going to be able to take me down?”

“There’s obviously a huge chance. No one’s going to deny that she is great at judo – she’s the Olympic champion, you know? So that’s going to be a huge part in her pedigree. But, you know, how much is she going to be willing to expose when she’s going to fight a high-level jiu-jitsu player?”

Davis is not only a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but also Japanese Jiu-Jitsu; meaning she is a very dangerous grappler. At 15-5 (7 sub 2 KO) Davis makes a great argument for a title shot. In fact, the styles on show could be the makings of the greatest Women’s MMA match ever.
