Alexander Gustafsson: I Think I Will Get The Title Shot Very Soon
Alexander Gustafsson has been making waves in the UFC Light-Heavyweight division for a while now, the Swedish mauler has compiled a 7-1 record since joining the UFC back in 2009. His overall record stands at 15-1, and Gustafsson is on a six fight tear at present.
Most fans and pundits believe that Gus is the rightful heir to the next title shot, a sentiment that Gustafsson also shares. Check out this snippet from MMAFighting:
“He wants to fight me, and I want to fight him … (The UFC hasn’t) offered me the fight yet. I’m just really hoping to get some answers soon … I’m really hoping for it, and I think I will get the fight. I think I will be offered a title fight very soon. Nothing is set or signed, though … I’m not going to be quiet anymore, I really want this fight. I really want to fight Jones. It’s on. It’s on. I will do anything I can to make it happen … I hope I can fight him as soon as possible. I’m in full training waiting for some news.”
With his most recent win, a decision over Shogun Rua in December of 2012, Gustafsson runs the risk of being inactive for too long. A long stint on the shelf could see Gus falling in to the same trap as many others before him, fighting in a title fight after a year long layoff. The problem with that formula is that the division moves along without you, and you could find yourself five places down the title queue if you lose the fight.
The risk is also present if he takes a fight in the meantime, but I suppose it is too late for that now. Had Gus been able to face MoUSAsi we wouldn’t be talking about this now, but headgear is overrated anyhow. A guy like Jones is going to chew you up if you have been to inactive and showcase ring rust. Plus with all the talk of Silva vs. Jones at the Cowboys, will Gustafsson evenbe in the equation at the end of this year?
