UFC Fight Night 57 Main Card Results: Frankie Edgar Scores Latest Finish In UFC History
Tonight’s (Sat., November 22, 2014) UFC Fight Night 57 main card is in the books from the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
The min event featured a pivotal featherweight showdown between Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar. “The Answer” came out with his usual frenetic pace, and Swanson countered with some good shots. He snapped some shots and sprawled to avoid a takedown before landing a big right hand. Edgar got a takedown and followed up with a second on a toss to end the first. Swanson landed some big shots in the second, but “The Answer” took him to the mat to land several ground elbows and punches in a dominant round. Edgar got a big slam to smother his opponent with more ground and pound in the third, bloodying Swanson badly. But Swanson came out aggressive with a combo and kick in the fourth, only to be taken down and hit with endless punches. Edgar snapped a sharp combo and got his seventh takedown at the start of the fifth round, attempting to finish Swanson with a guillotine and an arm triangle choke. “The Answer” rained down with shots and locked on a tight neck crank to earn a very late tap from Swanson in the latest finish in UFC history.
Top-ranked lightweights Bobby Green and Edson Barboza faced off in a huge co-main event. Green got a good trip early and proceeded to endlessly taunt Barboza, but it was “Junior” who landed the more effective strikes with varied punches and kicks. Barboza landed a huge head kick and some stiff low kicks to start the second, following up with huge overhand right and a spinning kick to floor Green. More low kicks followed and Barboza was in the zone, but Green recovered to land a couple flying knees. Green pushed the pace as Barboza slowed a bit. He cracked Green with a big right to start the third, but ate a left that opened up a cut. Green opened up with his strikes as the fight wore down, but Barboza closed with two solid kicks. “Junior” got back on track in a big way by handing Green his first UFC loss via unanimous decision.
Brad “One Punch” Pickett took on Chico Camus in his flyweight debut. Camus came out sharp with a flying knee and some accurate shots, but “One Punch” scored a takedown to rain down ground and pound. Camus recovered to land several left hooks in a close first round. Pickett’s nose was broken to start the second, and Camus continued to land. Pickett got a short-lived takedown and scored a big overhand right and a left hook. The last round saw Pickett land some big right hands as the pace slowed down. Camus’ takedown defense was strong, but Pickett was more often the aggressor. Camus was awarded the close split decision.
Despite his background as an NCAA Division runner-up in wrestling, heavyweight Jared Rosholt used his boxing to batter Oleksiy Oliynyk early on. However, the tables were soon turned on Rosholt, as Oliynyk blasted “The Big Show” on the jaw with a left hook that knocked him out towards the end of the first.
Former flyweight title challenger Joseph Benavidez took on Roufusport product Dustin Ortiz, with “Joe Jitsu” using crisp and varied striking to outclass Ortiz in the first. Benavidez kept it up in the second with a big head kick, but Ortiz dropped him with a straight right. Benavidez got up fast to continue landing sharp right hands. Benavidez drug the fight to the ground in the third, controlling Ortiz and outstriking him to win a clear-cut unanimous decision in another hard-fought bout.
Returning lightweight Matt Wiman took on longtime vet Isaac Vallie-Flagg in the opening main card bout. Vallie -Flagg controlled Wiman in the clinch early, but Wiman fought back to go for some submissions towards the end of the first. A slugfest erupted in the second, with hard shots traded both in an out of the clinch. Wiman took Vallie-Flagg’s back in the third, seeking a rear naked choke until the bell. In the end Wiman took home the grueling bout with a unanimous decision.
