UFC Fight Night 53 results and recap…..

UFC Fight Night 53 is going down today (Saturday, Oct. 4th, 2014) in Stockholm, Sweden, and is headlined by welterweights Rick “The Horror” Story and Gunnar “Gunni” Nelson. In another busy weekend for combat sports, the UFC are hitting us with another double header today, with UFC Fight Night 54 going down in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Main event fighters Gunnar Nelson and Rick Story took to the octagon in the headlining bout, and it started to seem that “Gunni” had too much to offer “The Horror” from the opening moments. Nelson found his range early, and even landed a slick takedown on the wrestler. In Story’s defense, he did get a few good shots off in the first round too, but you got the impression that Nelson was just biding his time.

The tide actually started to turn a little in the second round, as “The Horror” caught “Gunni” with some powerful inside hooks. At this point I had the rounds scored one a piece. The fight went in to the championship rounds, as Story continued to connect with hooks, and arguably was winning the fight after round three. A huge rally in round four saw Nelson rocked, but he managed to hang on well and survive. “The Horror” mau have blown his wad going for the finish.

Story made a great impression tonight, as he constantly outlanded Nelson with his power punching, it was truly a solid performance by the underdog, and a sloppy showing from the heavy favorite. Story takes the split decision win, and becomes the first man to defeat “Gunni”.

Featherweights Max Holloway and Akira Corassani clashed next, and the first round knockouts continued still. Corassani seemed to be connecting well until Holloway clipped him with a 1-2 combo. The Swede went down but seemed to have regained composure, until the same combination put his lights out. The referee seemed content to let Holloway beat Corassani 10 more times, for some odd reason. Great first round TKO for Holloway.

Ilir Latifi returned to action in a light-heavyweight tilt against Jan Blachowicz, and this was another quick finish on the main card. After rocking Latifi with a big body kick, Blachowicz followed up with a head kick and some ground and pound for good measure. Great win for Blachowicz, as he defeats the local favorite with a first round TKO.

Featherweights Niklas Backstrom and Mike Wilkinson kicked off the main card action in Sweden, and the Englishman made it a short night of work; countering off a flush front kick by Backstrom, Wilkinson fired off a right hand that sent his foe crashing to the canvas. Beautiful first round knockout for the Brit.
