“Rumble” Johnson Denies Domestic Abuse Allegations
Shocking news came from the MMA world yesterday (Fri., September 19, 2014), regarding surging No. 5-ranked UFC light heavyweight Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. The top contender has been suspended indefinitely by the UFC following a restraining order filed against Johnson by the mother of his children.
Domestic violence has been a big issue recently in the sports world, but according to “Rumble”, the issue does not pertain to him and he has been wrongly accused. Johnson took to his Facebook page to explain the situation:
“I want to apologize to everybody for my language yesterday. It really sux being accused of something I didn’t do. So plz forgive my reaction to the whole situation. My day will come that I can prove I’m innocent. Thank you for the support! Without the fans and my close friends/family I wouldn’t be able to function. I love you all….”
Fans can only hope that what Johnson is saying is true. Domestic violence is a terrible thing and these types of situations need to stop. For “Rumble’s side, I wish him the best and I hope the problem turns out as a just a big misunderstanding.
These types of allegations can really tamper a professional athlete’s career, especially in Johnson’s case. He is no stranger to adversity, as he is famously known for missing weight multiple times in his first tenure with the UFC and eventually being cut by the promotion.
“Rumble” then went back to the bottom, and dominated in a few lesser promotions en route to getting a second chance with the biggest promotion in the world. He is now riding an eight-fight win streak and has been on absolute tear since returning to the UFC.
Upon his return, he scored a dominant unanimous decision win over Phil Davis at UFC 172. Johnson followed that win up with a brutal knockout of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC on Fox 12 last July.
With these two impressive wins, Johnson was potentially on the cusp of a title shot at 205 lbs. However, with these allegations looming over his head and the company suspending him, we may not see that happen for quite some time.
