Matt Brown vs. Nate Diaz Official For UFC 189

Reeling from two straight defeats to the champion and number one contender, welterweight Matt Brown has found his next opponent.

And it could certainly be one that helps him get back into the win columns, as rumors have surfaced today that Brown will take on Nate Diaz at July’s 11 blockbuster UFC 189 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Brown tweeted that some big news was coming this morning:

Shortly thereafter, rumors began to fly. The news was then confirmed by Ariel Helwani on UFC Tonight.

Diaz has been fighting at lightweight since a one-sided throttling from Rory MacDonald back at UFC 137, and for a while it paid dividends for him as he reached a 155-pound title shot in 2012.

But the stacked division soon caught up with him, and Diaz also missed by a wide margin before his absolutely horrific UFC on FOX 13 loss to current champ Rafael dos Anjos.

The brash Stockton native will have his hands full in facing the angry “Immortal,” who saw the momentum of his seven-fight win streak disappear once he faced the true elite of the 170-pound crop. He’s taken quite the step down in competition in the younger Diaz, who hasn’t shown us a single thing that would suggest he could compete in the dangerous UFC welterweight arena. Will he be an easy rebound win for Brown?
