Fabricio Werdum Suggests Four Man Heavyweight Tournament

Although there were rumors that the UFC was trying to book Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum for September’s UFC 191, it’s still unclear when the newly crowned heavyweight champion will return, and who he’ll put his title up against.

The heavyweight division is suddenly packed with contenders, leaving the promotion a difficult task when it comes to choosing the next title challenger. So what does “Vai Cavalo” think?

Although he initially suggested a rematch with Cain Velasquez, who he shockingly brutalized at June’s UFC 188, Werdum now thinks a four-man tournament of sorts could be the best idea:

“I said a rematch [against Cain Velasquez], but I think the best way is to have 4 guys [fight] for the title shot. Dos Santos, Miocic, Cain Velasquez, and Arlovski,” Werdum told BJPENN.COM’s Layzie The Savage. “These guys fight each other. Like, Miocic vs. Cain Velasquez, and dos Santos vs. Arlovski,” he explained. “Who(ever) is the best one and fights a good fight, the best performance fights with me, and that’s it.”

Despite the multitude of contenders possibly playing in to Werdum not having a fight yet, the champion also stated that he needs some time off after a very long and draining camp:

“I need [time off)],” Werdum exclaimed.

“This wasn’t like a one camp for three months. This was a camp for a long time. I trained seven years for this moment. I just want to recover my body and my mind. I want to enjoy my family. I just want a little time to enjoy my belt, but I’ll fight anyone no problem.”

Hopefully Werdum doesn’t need an extended period of time off, as the former champion Velasquez was out for nearly two years, keeping the division in a limbo. Who should Werdum meet when he returns?
