Donald Cerrone vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov Possible For UFC 187
UFC 187 is set to go down on May 23, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada with the main event being the highly anticipated featherweight championship bout between reigning king Jose Aldo and Irish sensation “The Notorious” Conor McGregor.
Today we gained some insight as to what the co-main event could be for the upcoming card. According to MMAJunkie’s John Morgan, top lightweights Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov have a great chance of clashing in May:
About 99.9 percent sure @Cowboycerrone vs. @TeamKhabib is co-main of @ufc 187. Just can’t get necessary confirmations. But love that fight!!

The two men were actually supposed to meet at UFC 178 last September. The bout was supposedly agreed upon by each side, but Nurmagomedov suffered a knee injury moments after the bout was announced. With “The Eagle” apparently healthy, there is no better time for the fight, as it is likely going to be a title eliminator bout, as he is currently the No. 2-ranked lightweight, while Cerrone sits at No. 3.
Both combatants are also riding impressive win streaks. Cerrone may be the hottest fighter not only in the 155 pound division, but in all of MMA as well. “Cowboy” has strung together an ultra-impressive seven-fight win streak, including wins over former champions Benson Henderson, and Eddie Alvarez, as well as Myles Jury, Edson Barboza, Jim Miller, Adriano Martins, and Evan Dunham.
The Dagestan-born grappler is riding a six-fight UFC win streak of his own, his most impressive win coming over Rafael dos Anjos, who is scheduled to meet champion Anthony Pettis at UFC 185 on March 14, 2015 in Dallas. Nurmagomedov also holds an undefeated 22-0 overall record in MMA.
With both men arguably deserving title shots to begin with, this fight is a no brainer. Will we finally see two of the best lightweights in the world meet come May?
